Association of Investment Management Companies (AIMC) organized
Association of Investment Management Companies together with Polaris International Securities Investment Trust Co., Ltd, Taiwan organized a 2009 ETFs Development Strategies Seminar on 19 May 2009 at Grand Sheraton Sukhumvit in order to present the development of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) both in regional and global scale, which included an exchange of knowledge and experience in setting up and managing ETFs effectively to Thai fund mangers.
In Asia, there are 194 ETFs with assets of USD 45.56 Billion. Japan has the highest number of ETFs listing, 64 ETFs with assets of USD 23.39 Billion, which then followed by South Korea and Singapore.
Traditional ETF investment only covered blue-chip indices such as S&P 500, FTSE100, Hang Seng, and Nikkei. However, new ETF evolved from proliferation of new indices that diverse ETFs investment into different type like Fixed Income ETFs, Shariah ETFs, Real Estate ETFs, Emerging Market ETFs or even Dividend ETFs.
For Thailand, Equity ETFs was first introduced in 2007. Now, the market has 2 ETFs, ThaiDEX SET50 ETF (TEDX) with SET 50 market-weighted index as its underlying asset and M Track Energy (ENGY) with SET ENERGY as its underlying asset, with total assets of USD 0.05 Billion
